Sarah E. Goode – Woman of Invention

Sarah E. Goode was born in Toledo (Ohio) in 1855.  She ran a furniture store.  Many of her customers complained of not having enough space.  So she dreamed up a cabinet that folded out into a bed.

She was the first African American woman ever to receive a US patent.  This was in 1885.

Now this makes the modern sofa bed look a bit frivolous!
