Young Girl in the Park by Tsugouharu Foujita (1957)

The artist was Japanese and worked in Paris from the age of 24.  I think the delicacy of the painting is evocative of Japan although the park  is probably European (the Bois de Bologne?). The young girl is holding a startled looking cat which almost merges into her apron.  This charming work was painted by the artist when he was 71.

My attention was drawn to this work by a huge doorstop of a book I got from the library – The Art Book from Phaidon Press.  Get it out if you have strong enough muscles.   There are 579 pages, each dedicated to one work by an artist.  The artists are in alpha order so you get interesting juxtapositions between modern art and old masters.
