The New
Zealand Book Council came up with a list of books by New
Zealanders that they reckon every kid should have read by the age of 12. I decided to check out the ones I haven't
read and post about the ones I agreed were good (in no particular order).
Under
the Mountain by Maurice Gee is not for very young
children. But if your children liked
Harry Potter they'll like this.
Originally published in 1979 but has hardly dated at all.
Young twins get involved in a hair raising adventure to
save Auckland (and the planet) from extinction.
They have special powers.
Adults who like sci-fi will like this one too.
This was the author's first childrens' book – he went
on to write many others.
