State of the Month – Rhode Island

Here is the next instalment of my monthly feature going through the States of the United States in alphabetical order to check out how they got named, what their flag is like and other things of interest.  Rhode Island has some of its own words – like bubbler for drinking fountain, cabinets for milkshakes and grinder for any over stuffed foot long sandwich.

Location – Rhode Island is the smallest State in terms of land area.  But its population density is the second highest.

Origin of name – Rhode Island's official name is the
State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations – a bit of a mouthful.  Despite its name most of the State is on the mainland.

Nicknames – the Ocean State

Flag

Capital – Providence (also the biggest city)

Unusual town name – Common Fence Point

Flower – Violet

Bird – Rhode Island Red Chicken

State Tree – Red Maple

Signature foods – Rhode Island Clam Chowder, Clam Cake, Coffee Milk ( a mix of coffee syrup and milk)

Famous places to visit – State Capitol building, Newport Summer 'Cottages', Cliff Walk (Newport), Fort Adams State Park
