Educated by Tara Westover

Educated is a memoir written by a relatively young woman about her childhood and family.  It is easy to read because it is very straightforwardly written.  But it is not an easy read.  This woman's childhood was unbelievably damaging.  It is quite amazing that this family did not come to the attention of the authorities.

In fact for all of us who had difficult childhoods, I recommend that you read this book.  Not only is it quite likely (I hope) that yours isn't as bad, it also gives hope as to how to emerge, not unscathed, but whole later in life.

The family are Mormons but this is not a book about Mormonism.  It is very particular to her family and is not making any points outside that.

It is evidence that a good (even if late) education will arm a person to cope with life and their family.
