State of the Month: North Dakota

Here is the next instalment of my monthly feature going through the States of the United States in alphabetical order to check out how they got named, what their flag is like and other things of interest.

Location – North Dakota is called a Midwestern state – a bit of a laugh since it is on the northern border and to my eyes is actually in the eastern half of the country.

Nicknames – Peace Garden State, Rough Rider State, Flickertail State

Flag

Capital – Bismarck (but the largest city is Fargo).  Bismarck was named in 1873 after the German Chancellor of that name.  They were hoping to attract German settlers.

Unusual town names – Zap, Buttzville

Flower – Wild Prairie Rose

Bird – Western Meadowlark

Signature foods – Chippers (chocolate covered potato chips)

Famous places to visit – Theodore Roosevelt National Park, International Peace Garden

Famous people from North Dakota – Peggy Lee, Angie Dickinson
