Regions of New Zealand – Canterbury

The mascot of the Crusaders, Canterbury's Super Rugby team

This month's region is Canterbury

Location – You find Canterbury on the right hand side of the South Island.  It's large geographically but less than a million people live there.

Origin of name – I couldn't find anything definitive but am willing to guess that it was named after Canterbury, a cathedral city, in England.

Cardboard Cathedral - temporary cathedral
Main Cities – Christchurch.  By far the biggest city in the region. You may recall that Christchurch was hit by 2 big earthquakes in 2010 and 2011.  The city has still not fully recovered – the iconic cathedral has still to be rebuilt.

Lake Tekapo & Church of the Good Shepherd
Places to visit – Christchurch (Cardboard cathedral), Mt Cook (highest mountain in NZ), Lake Tekapo, Akaroa, Hanmer Springs, Kaikoura (whale watching)
