Moon River

Moon river, wider than a mile
I'm crossing you in style someday
Oh, dream maker
You heartbreaker
Where ever you're going I'm going your way
Two drifters off to see the world
There's such a lot of world to see
We're after the same rainbow's end
Waiting round the bend
My huckleberry friend
Moon river and me

Moon River is a song that seems to have been around for ever.  It dates back to 1961 and was written for the movie Breakfast at Tiffany's starring the incomparable Audrey Hepburn.

The story goes that one of the film executives wanted the song cut from the film and something faster put in.  But Audrey put her foot down and the song stayed.

One of the other reasons I like the song is that the tune is reasonably straight forward and I could play it reasonably successfully without much practice.

Other great Mancini tunes include The Pink Panther, Windmills of Your Mind and Days of Wine & Roses

Moon River has been covered by legions of famous singers including Amy Winehouse, Frank Sinatra, Rod Stewart, Barbra Streisand, Aretha Franklin and Elton John.

  1. My daughter once went to a fancy dress party dressed as Audrey Hepburn - I helped with dress and gloves and her dad made a fake cigarette holder. She looked as stunning as Ah!
