State of the Month: Nebraska

Here is the next instalment of my monthly feature going through the States of the United States in alphabetical order to check out things of interest.

Location – Nebraska is pretty much in the middle from coast to coast and slightly above centre (Do you like the technical geographic terms?)  Wikipedia says that it is the only triply landlocked state.

Origin of name – Apparently the name means flat water.

Nicknames – Cornhusker State, The Tree Planter State

Capital – Lincoln (but the largest city is Omaha)

Flower – Goldenrod

State Tree – Eastern Cottonwood

State Bird – Western Meadowlark

Signature foods – Chicken-fried Steak, Raisin Pie. Cheese Frenchees, Reuben sandwiches (claimed by Nebraska and New York)

Famous places to visit – Courthouse & Jail Rocks, Stragetic Air & Space Museum, Chimney Rock National Historic Site, Laurintzen Gardens

Famous businesses/brands – Kool-aid, CliffsNotes

Famous people from Nebraska – Warren Buffett, Crazy Horse, Gerald Ford, Fred Astaire, Marlon Brando, Hilary Swank, Roxane Gay

Go to this Pinboard to see the States of the Month so far.

  1. My son just moved to Omaha from Florida. He was 10 minutes away from us and now he's 18 hours away! I learned something about his new state from your post.

  2. Interesting that Kool-Aid is from Nebraska!
