State of the Month – Michigan

Here is the next instalment of my monthly feature going through the States of the United States in alphabetical order to check out how they got named, what their flag is like and other things of interest.

Location – Michigan is said to be a mid-western State – this is quite confusing for me, since when you look at a map the state is very clearly in the eastern half of mainland USA.  Michigan is a state made up of 2 non-contiguous peninsulas – quite eccentric!  There is a bridge.

Nicknames – The Wolverine State, The Great Lakes State.  Wolverines are not common in the State – there was a sighting of one in 2004 – the first for 200 years.

Flag

Capital – Lansing (biggest city is Detroit)

Flower – Apple Blossom

Bird – American Robin

Signature foods – Coney Dog, Detroit Square Pizza, Apples

Places to visit – Lansing University, Bronner's Christmas Wonderland (Frankenmuth), Muskagon, Kalamazoo (great name), Petoskey and Mackinac Island

Famous businesses/brands – a standout for the automotive industry – General Motors, Ford and Chrysler. Domino's Pizza.

Famous people from Michigan – Bill Haley & his Comets, The Supremes, The Temptations, Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder, Smokey Robinson, Mary Wells, Del Shannon

Henry Ford, Lily Tomlin, Charles Lindbergh, Steve Ballmer (Microsoft), Will Kellogg,  Betty Ford,

Go to this Pinboard to see the States of the Month so far.
