State of the Month – Maine

Here is the 19th instalment of my monthly feature going through the States of the United States in alphabetical order to check out how they got named, what their flag is like and other things of interest.

Location – Maine is part of New England.  New Hampshire is to the West and the Atlantic Ocean is on the East.  Canada is to the North.  Maine was part of Massachusetts until it became a separate State in 1820.  You find the Appalachian Mountains in Maine – which was a surprise to me since for some reason I thought they were further south.

Origin of name – It is thought that the State is named after a French province.

Nicknames – Pine Tree State

Capital – Augusta  but Portland is the biggest city

Flower – White Pine Cone

Bird - Chickadee

Signature foods – Blueberry Pie, Whoopie Pie, Lobster, Moxie

Famous places to visit – Quoddy Head State Park, Pemaquid Point Light, Cranberry Isles, Kennebunkport

Famous businesses/brands – LL Bean

Famous people from Maine – Stephen King, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow (Song of Hiawatha), Edna St Vincent Millay (poet), Nelson Rockefeller, Liv Tyler and Andrew Wyeth

  1. My dad was born in Portland, ME and we vacationed with his family there every summer. One of my favorite states in the Union! Acadia National Park and Bar Harbor show the dramatic side of Maine, along with the coastal town of Kennebunkport. Don't forget the moose! :)
