HeartBurn by Nora Ephron

HeartBurn is not a new book.  It was published first in 1983.  Its author is a very successful screenwriter (When Harry Met Sally, Sleepless in Seattle and Julie and Julia).  The book is very well written.

The edition I read had an introduction by the author from 2004.  The introduction deals with how broadly autobiographical the book is.  Do be sure to read it as well as the rest of the book.  Unfortunately the author is no longer with us.

The book is a quick read  - about 180 small pages.

Nigella Lawson said that HeartBurn 'is the perfect, bittersweet, sobbingly funny, all-too-true confessional novel.  There is not a wrong word – about food, marriage, life, love, loss – and all rings true and makes you laugh'

I agree with Nigella.

For foodies, there are a few comfort food recipes sprinkled throughout the book.

The reviews for this book on Goodreads are very mixed.  I don't get it – maybe some people just don't like the idea of taking a terrible event (your husband running off with another woman when you are 7 month's pregnant) and turning it into comedy gold.

The husband concerned was in fact Carl Bernstein of Watergate fame.  Ephron says that he was very angry with her for writing the book.  But what a case of karma.

If you are into audiobooks, Meryl Streep has narrated it.

  1. I read it years ago and really enjoyed it. Must look for it in the library. I remember there was a great recipe for Key Lime Pie...

  3. I read that book years after it had made it's debut and I liked it.
