State of the Month – Iowa

Here is the next instalment of my monthly feature going through the States of the United States in alphabetical order to check out how they got named, what their flag is like and other things of interest.

Location – Iowa is a landlocked State.  It borders at least 6 other states. Its east and west borders are entirely defined by rivers – Mississippi, Misssouri and Big Sioux.  Iowa became the 29th state in 1846.  It is the state where the plane crash happened that took out Buddy Holly, Richie Valens and the Big Bopper.

Nicknames – Hawkeye State (from the Last of the Mohicans – as was Hawkeye Pierce in MASH)

Capital – Des Moines

Bird – Eastern Goldfinch

Signature foods – Loose meat Sandwich – not quite a burger and not saucy like a Sloppy Joe, Pork Tenderloin, Rhubarb Pie

Cornell College, Mount Vernon

Famous places to visit – Iowa State Fairs (very famous), The Bridges of Madison County took place in Iowa, Orange City's Tulip festival, Iowa State Capitol (which has 5 domes), Mount Vernon has been named as one of the 10 coolest small towns in America, Brucemore (Cedar Rapids)

Mamie Eisenhower

  1. Thank you for this. This is fun.

  2. Iowa is where I grew up, and a couple more years later in life. Beautiful farm country.
