Here is the next instalment of my monthly feature going
through the States of the United States in alphabetical order to check out how
they got named, what their flag is like and other things of interest.
Location –
Indiana is known as a Midwestern State – but on the map of the USA it looks Mid
Eastern to me! There are about 900 lakes
in Indiana. More than half of Indiana's
border is water. There are 3 major ports – Burns Harbor, Jeffersonville and
Mount Vernon. There's a song I knew
years ago called Indiana Wants Me.
Nicknames –
Hoosier State – there is lots of controversy about it but it is said that
Hoosier means a backwoodsman. The
State's motto is 'The Crossroads of America'.

Seal
Capital –
Indianapolis – also its largest city.
Flower –

State
Sport – the big sport in Indiana is basketball.
Famous
places to visit – Cataract Falls, Covered Bridges, Kissing
Bridges
Famous
people from Indiana – Michael Jackson (and the other
Jacksons), David Letterman, Adam Lambert, James Dean, Axl Rose, Colonel
Sanders, Abraham Lincoln, Carole Lombard, Steve McQueen, Wilbur Wright
We would drive through Indiana when traveling to visit my sister. I loved that trip when I was a kid. Such a big date!
ReplyDeleteI always wondered what Hoosier meant.
ReplyDeleteHellooooo again! I was born in Indianapolis and you forgot to mention THE MOST IMPORTANT THING about Indiana. The Indianapolis 500! "The greatest spectacle in auto racing". :-)
