State of the Month – Hawaii

Here is the next instalment of my monthly feature going through the States of the United States in alphabetical order to check out how they got named, what their flag is like and other things of interest. 

Hawaii was the last State to join – in 1959.  I guess I shouldn't say last, since there may be new ones??

Location – In the Pacific Ocean – part of Polynesia

Language – American English and Hawaiian are both official languages.

Nicknames – The Aloha State

Flag – it was a surprise to see the Union Jack features in the State Flag

Capital – Honolulu

Flower – Hibiscus

Signature foods – Shave Ice

Famous places to visit – USS Arizona Memorial in Pearl Harbor, Waikiki, Diamond Head State Monument

Famous businesses/brands – Dole Food Company, Aloha Airlines

Famous people from Hawaii – President Obama, Nicole Kidman (thought she was Australian), Bruno Mars, Charles Lindbergh and Bette Midler.  Captain James Cook died in Hawaii.
