Suzanne
takes you down to her place near the river
You can hear the boats go by
You can spend the night beside her
And you know that she's half crazy
But that's why you want to be there
And she feeds you tea and oranges
That come all the way from China
And just when you mean to tell her
That you have no love to give her
Then she gets you on her wavelength
And she lets the river answer
That you've always been her lover
And you want to travel with her
And you want to travel blind
And you know that she will trust you
For you've touched her perfect body with your mind.

I admit to being a big Leonard Cohen fan – albeit only
for the last 10 years or so. I've posted
about his music before
- Leonard
Cohen Live in London, Tower
of Song, Hallelujah
and Come
Healing- and about a biography
of him which was a great read.
I don't know if the Nobel people ever give out prizes
posthumously – but if they do, they should give one to Cohen for his poetry.
Suzanne
was
Leonard Cohen's first hit. He wrote it
about Suzanne Vaillancourt – the wife of a friend of his. According to him, they never were an item –
but that line 'I touched her perfect body with my mind' – is very sensual to
me.
Cohen didn't record his first album until he was
32! These days all the new artists seem
to be teenagers!

A favorite song of mine too, by the talented Leonard Cohen.
ReplyDeleteOne of his great songs. I've been a Leonard Cohen fan as long as I can think. He is the only guy who ever wrote a song with my name that I liked.
ReplyDeleteMerry Christmas!
