A Man Called Ove by Fredrik Backman

A Man Called Ove would never have crossed my radar except for  Heather from Books & Quilts  who linked it in to Books You Loved: June and Barbara from Stray Thoughts who brought it to Books You Loved: July

I found this book quite remarkable.  It is probably the most memorable book I've read this year – and I've read a few goodies.

What can I say about it without either giving you the wrong impression or spoiling it for you?

Some comments:

·         The book was originally written in Swedish but the translation is fantastic.
·         The main character is simply spell-binding.  I think he taught me quite a lot about the sort of good man that is good through deeds rather than words. Ove is what some might call a grumpy old man – but after reading this book, you will just take him into your heart.
·         This book is hysterically funny in parts and very sad in others
·         I think this book would appeal equally to men and women

Please read this book and let me know what you think.

  1. Several of the book bloggers that I follow have read and praised this book. And now you have, too! I think I need to put it on my "to be read" list.

  2. I have yet to read this book.

It has gotten nothing but rave reviews. I do have it on my shelf.

Nice post, Carole. Thanks for sharing.

  3. I read another book by this author and found it whimsical but not really interesting. It put me off any other books. Maybe I should give this a try.

  4. I've read all three of Back,an's books that have been translated so far. By far one of my favorite authors. Ove is the best of the three. I don't re- read books, but this one I will just for the sheer joy the character brings me. Britt-Marie was Here is just as good. The second one, My Grandmother Asked Me to Tell You She's Sorry wasn't quite as good, but still an excellent read. Backman is a master at capturing human nature and bringing it across in a way that makes us laugh.
