The Gilded Hour by Sara Donati

I have read the Into the Wildnerness series of books so when I saw a new book out by Sara Donati, I ordered it straight away.  It is a stand alone book but some of the characters are descendents of the people in the series.

The Gilded Hour is a powerhouse of a book – a ripper read.  There is a series of abominable crimes  (think a sort of Jack the Ripper) but the main protagonists are very well characterised – although the main male felt a tad anachronistic in his attitudes to me.  The book is set in 1883 and in New York.

One of the villains felt so villainous that it was a bit unbelievable – but then I found out from the author's notes that this person was real!

Highly recommended.  I can't tell you why the title was chosen because I am no wiser about that after reading the book.

  1. Maybe the crimes happened at sunset (golden=gilded hour) ?

  6. Just added this to my booklist! Going to check out the Wilderness series as well. Thanks! Have you read The Alienist? Based on what I'm reading here, sounds like you would like it as well.

  7. I like a series and if some characters carry over to other books I really like that. Have you ever read a series called The Australians by William Stuart Long? There are twelve books in that series and the cabarets go on I. Other books, then there descendent carry on the story. They are old books.
