We caught a bus from Nathan Rd down to the Star Ferry – not a long journey but we
have discovered that walking too much in the Hong Kong heat is very tiring. We
took the Star Ferry over to Hong Kong Island – it's a short but fab trip. It crosses the harbor which is teeming with
vessels, big and small. We chose to go
on the upper deck of the ferry which was still very cheap.
Due to some excellent research by my better half, the
plan was then to catch a bus up to the peak rather than taking the tram. The tram ride would have been quicker but the
crowds waiting for it would have been long.
The transfer to the bus station did involve walking a little distance on
elevated covered walkways to Exchange Square.
The bus up to
the peak was a good way to go (No 15 Bus) cost HKD 4.20. It took half an hour or so but you saw a lot
of the suburbs up on the mountain on the way as well as some good views.
We looked around the Peak Galleria which was very
well kept - the shops weren't open though.
We enjoyed the good views from the top which were free - unlike the Peak
viewing platform which was not only expensive but crowded so we didn't do it.
We did go into the Peak terminal building which was a
funny shape like a half moon on a stalk.
I wasn't impressed by the shops
although some of the restaurants/cafes were quite well situated.
We went back down into town via the Peak tram - so
glad we didn't go up that way it was heaving with people - not so bad on the
way down. It is quite steep and you realise why all the seats face backwards -
otherwise you'd slide right off. Very quick trip down - say 6 or 7 minutes.
I'm glad we did these two touristy type things – they were crowded but still worth doing.
The ride up the peak was fun-you are right about the steepness and all the humidity.
