A Boy with a Violin by Frans Hals



This painting is by a previously unknown Dutch painter (well unknown to me anyway) Frans Hals.  It was painted in the 1620's.

I have never seen another painting of this era that is diagonal.  The boy's face is arresting but not that attractive.  He doesn't look particularly happy, does he?  That's quite some hat he has on –assuming it is a hat and not just shaggy hair!

The style of this painting reminds me of the Impressionists – although it was much earlier.
