Where'd You Go, Bernadette by Maria Semple

Where'd You Go, Bernadette is not the sort of book I would normally read – to be honest the cover doesn't do anything for me.  But I read a post by Books A True Story which gave me a push to order it up from the library.  And I owe her for the recommendation.

This book is quirky – in a good way.  It is about a gifted woman who has retreated as a result of feeling a failure.  Both the woman, Bernadette, and her daughter Bee are well drawn.  The other characters are very slightly 'cartoonish' – but again this is not a criticism.

There are some very funny parts in the book.  And I did find it to be a page turner.  Overall, a very good read.

  2. I've wondered about this book, but the title and cover don't give any clues to what it is about. Quirky and funny I can handle.

  4. Funny thing about this book is that we started to read it in my book club - the male of the group (1 male, 2 females) chose it - and then he hated it so he chose a different book. Myself and the other female club member ended up really liking it, though.
