Brantôme – The Venice of the Périgord

Brantôme – The Venice of the Périgord

Brantôme was every bit as picturesque as I remembered it. We visited it on a day trip from our base in Bournel – on the same day that we also went to Périgueux.

As you can see from the aerial view of the town it is situated on an island in the middle of the river Dronne.  It is this being surrounded by water that leads to the town being called the Venice of the Périgord.

The Abbey is not on the island but on the other side of the river and is a main attraction.  The Abbey dates from the 15th century and is dedicated to St Peter and St Sicarius (who I don't know anything about at all).

The town is nice to walk around and has many cute houses like this one.  Many of them have geraniums in their window boxes – not just because they are pretty but because they deter mosquitoes.

Lots of people were enjoying the river when we were there.  They were kayaking, going on boat rides etc etc   This didn't really appeal to me since the water seemed pretty full of weed.

We saw the hotel I stayed in years ago – Le Moulin de L'Abbaye – which looks still in very good nick and no doubt just as expensive.
