Nostalgia Alert!

Sausage sizzle

I don't know whether Sausage Sizzles are peculiar to New Zealand (and Australia).  But I have fond childhood memories of sausage sizzles at school fairs.  The food wasn't anything fancy – just a slice of white buttered bread wrapped round a grilled sausage and smothered in tomato sauce – which you might call ketchup.

The sausages were grilled on a little barbecue right there.  They were usually pretty charred on the outside – and if you were lucky were cooked through.

Nowadays sausage sizzles have gone more upmarket and have brown bread, tomato sauce, onion and mustard.  Much too fancy!

  1. I think they're special to New Zealand and Australia.
My folks are from Malta (a British empire spot in the Mediterranean) and never served it. I grew up in New York and have been in Canada since 1972. We've vacationed in all of the provinces and many of the states and never encountered them. The closest thing I'ver ever seen in North America is a sausage on a bun with mustard (the onions sometimes.) Ketchup is usually served on a burger. Now you know ;-)

  2. It would have been a hotdog roll in the UK but there's something about that which reminds me of Plzen in the Czech Republic where I had the most amazingly flavourful sausage with mustard, a pickle and a slice of sourdough. It was probably one of the greatest meals I'd ever had.
