The Cuckoo's Calling by Robert Galbraith (aka JK Rowling)

I didn't know what to expect when the long awaited copy of The Cuckoo's Calling arrived from the library.  I loved the Harry Potter books but didn't enjoy The CasualVacancy quite so much.
Well, I was very pleasantly surprised indeed.  I'm not a regular detective story reader so I don't know how the book compares with others of that genre.  But it was a rollickingly good read.  I liked the hero a lot and his side kick was also a good character.
What did impress me is that she managed to make a cracker of a story without grimness and goriness.
If you have written this off as a crime novel, give it a second chance.  It was a really good read.  JK Rowling – you are so talented!

  1. I really liked this book, too, as well as The Silkworm, the second book in the series. I think she's got another winner here.

  2. I liked Casual Vacancy but I think I enjoyed it because the genre was different! I think I'd like this as well for the same reason.

  4. Huh. Sounds pretty good - I normally don't do genres like these. Once in a while, but its normally not my thing.
Why did JK Rowling go with a boy's name?

  5. Interesting. I did read The Casual Vacancy but have lost track of her books since she keeps writing under pseudonyms!

  6. I, too, didn't love Casual Vacancy. I liked this one a lot better, but wouldn't say I loved it.
