Vermeer

Girl with a Pearl Earring

Vermeer (1632-1675) was a fabulous Dutch artist.  His most famous work is the one above – Girl with a Pearl Earring.

In 2003 a film was made about the painting.  I saw it by accident one day and found it a rewarding watch – very atmospheric.  The film is also called Girl with a Pearl Earring.

Vermeer died at the age of 43 and left behind a wife and 11 – yes 11 – children.  He wasn't famous in his own lifetime and in fact left his wife in dire financial circumstances.

The Milk Maid
There are only 34 Vermeer paintings in existence.  He was probably not a full time painter – he was involved in his father's art dealer's business.

The Allegory of Painting
What I particularly like about his paintings is the way he deals with light – quite exquisite.

  1. Carole, I was blessed to get to see Vermeer's work in person at the National Art Gallery in Washington DC! It truly is exquisite! He is my favorite. The Dutch painters were the best!

  2. Indeed those pictures are so beautiful, the combination of light and colours is extraordinary, and his style so distinctive.
