It wasn't until toward the end of this gentle, engaging book - The School of Essential Ingredients – that I decided that the book was well worthy of a blog post.
Although it is a story about a cooking school – it is not the sort of school that teaches recipes as such. The teacher is a fey creature who is all about taste and smell and not about recipes.
There are some beautiful passages about food that any foodie will appreciate. Here is one just as a taste:
'She
took a piece of melon in her fingers, wrapped it with a translucent slice of
pink meat, and motioned for him to open his mouth. The meat was a whisper of salt against the
dense, sweet fruit. It felt like summer
in a hot land…'
I heartily recommend this luscious book to you.
