Diana Gabaldon

Diana Gabaldon - The Outlander Series

Some years ago a colleague recommended a book called Cross Stitch to me.  This book is known as the Outlander in the US (not sure why it has a different title there).  It was the first in a series of books about Claire – there are now 7 in all.  And I have read and enjoyed them all.

They are big books – not the sort of thing you can read in one sitting.  The author Diana Gabaldon is very talented.  She was born in Arizona.  She had a scientific background but this does not mean her books are stuffed with science.  At one time she wrote comic book scripts for Walt Disney.  She says that she wrote Cross Stitch as practice – just to see if she could and never intended to show it to anyone.  It is just as well she changed her mind about that!

When I mention that there is some time travel involved – please don't imagine that these books are about time travel – they aren't.  It's just a device that enables us to see the past through Claire's eyes – the eyes not of today but of the forties.

One thing I can guarantee is that you'll never forget Jamie Fraser once you've encountered him!

The main books in the series are in this order:

Cross Stitch/Outlander
Dragonfly in Amber
Voyager
Drums of Autumn
The Fiery Cross
A Breath of Snow and Ashes
An Echo in the Bone

An eighth book is expected in March 2014.
