The Importance of Being Earnest by Oscar Wilde

The Importance of Being Earnest by Oscar Wilde

Like many of you we studied this play, The Importance of Being Earnest, at school and performed sections of it.  At that time I thought it was clever but not particularly cool.  Then along came the TV version with the wonderful Dame Judi Dench who did the line "A handbag!" real justice.

Oscar Wilde

The playwright Oscar Wilde was famous for his wit – often cutting – and for getting himself into a world of trouble.

Some lines from the play:

"All women become like their mothers.  That is their tragedy.  No man does.  That's his."

"The truth is rarely pure and never simple"

"I never travel without my diary.  One should always have something sensational to read on the train"

"To lose one parent may be regarded as a misfortune; to lose both looks like carelessness"

Other sayings by Oscar Wilde include:

Nothing that is worth knowing can be taught.

Be yourself; everyone else is already taken

Always forgive your enemies; nothing annoys them so much.

I am not young enough to know everything.
