When
I visited the Grand Canyon on a day
trip from Las Vegas, I quickly realised why it is one of the greatest wonders
of the world. I visited a few years ago
now and the walkway that now has been built projecting over the Canyon was not
yet there.
I
am glad because there is no way I would have been brave enough to go out on
it. I am not too bad generally with
heights but don't like glass floors or cantilevered structures.
Although
the canyon is truly spectacular I found out when fact checking for this post
that it is not the deepest canyon in the world – that honour goes to a canyon
in the Himalayas.
It
was carved out by the Colorado river – which shows the power of water.
It
can be a deadly environment for hikers.
There have been about 600 deaths in the Grand Canyon since the late
1800's including airplane crashes, falls, drownings and things like heat
stroke.
Back in the early 90's we were at a trade show in Las Vegas, Nevada. Flew over the grand canyon and it was an amazing site. The pilot gave us the guided tour. Never actually visited.
ReplyDeleteGrowing up in England, I can remember seeing pictures of the Grand Canyon and thinking how much I would love to go there. It didn't seem very likely then - we didn't travel much! - but I did make it a few years ago, and it totally lived up to all my hopes and expectations, it was one of the most memorable days of my life, and I think it often. It is breath-taking.
ReplyDeleteIn 2006 I hiked in and out in one day with a group. It was one of the greatest experiences of my life! We started on the South Rim and hiked Hermit's Rest to Dripping Spring and back. I love it and since moving to Arizona a few months ago I am ready to go back and try more trails.
ReplyDeleteI have never been to the Grand Canyon~ One regret I have is not visiting there when my son lived in Arizona~ He lived in Phoenix for one school year (he is a teacher). There is no way I would ever walk on that walkway...it makes me dizzy just looking at the picture:) Lynn @ Turnips 2 Tangerines
