Digging to America by Anne Tyler turned out to be a wonderful read. I had no real expectations of it at the
outset but ended up feeling that it was a jewel of a book. Somehow Anne Tyler has managed to capture very
gently and truthfully the essence of issues faced by immigrants and
locals. I won't give away too much so as
not to spoil it for you.
It
is the author's 17th novel – now that's what I call prolific! It dates back to 2006. I stumbled across it by a happy
accident. You don't need to be an
American to love this book – it will speak to anyone. The main character, Maryam, is a true tour de
force.
If
you are in the mood for a gentle, subtle, funny and very insightful book you
will enjoy this.
I am picking up this soon ! Thanks for suggesting .

So glad you enjoyed this book. Anne Tyler is a personal favorite of mine. I read all of her books as soon as they are published. You should seek out some of her others. The qualities you describe here are present in all of them.
ReplyDeleteI am very fond of Anne Tyler. She is superb.
ReplyDeleteI agree Carole. A wonderful book. I have not ever read an Anne Tyler book that wasn't wonderful. Her female characters are all so unique and varied.
ReplyDeleteYou always have the most interesting books, Carole. And...I ALWAYS find more books...thanks for hosting this every month.

I loved this book too - I did it on my blog here http://clothesinbooks.blogspot.co.uk/2012/03/book-digging-to-america-by-anne-tyler.html I thought it was beautifully written, and very good at seeing everyone's point of view. It's always a pleasure to see what you are reading Carole.
ReplyDeleteI listened to this in audio and really enjoyed it. Immigrant theme is a favorite of mine so this book was right up my alley. I have found some of the author's books a little too quiet but this was excellent.
