Goya

Goya - Therese Louise de Sureda

A Spanish artist for you this time.  Goya was a Spanish court painter at the time of the French Revolution.  Late in his life Goya settled in France (Bordeaux) and it was there that he died at the grand old age of 92!

Goya and his wife had 8 children but only one survived to become an adult!  How sad those days were.

Goya - Lady in a Black Mantilla

Sister Wendy says that Goya was definitely the greatest artist of the 18th century.

Goya - Family of Charles IV

This is the most famous of his paintings – The Family of Charles IV – and what is amazing about it is that he shows the Royal Family in quite an unflattering light – but yet they loved the picture!

Goya - detail from Family of Charles IV

Looking at the detail of the picture showing the King I'm not sure I would have liked it if I were him.

  1. Lovely pictures. I can't imagine having so many children and only one of them living to adulthood. What a difficult life.
