Until
I was checking out a bit more about the great pioneer of Abstract Art, Mondrian, I didn't realise that he was
born in Holland. For some reason I
thought he was American. He did die in
New York at the age of 71 having lived there for 4 years during the War. He is buried in the Cypress Hills Cemetery in
Brooklyn.
Mondrian
started out as a landscape painter but in the early 1900's he stared doing more
abstract work culminating in his well known works featuring lines and bold
colours. He refused to allow diagonals
into his works – he thought that they were morally suspect. He also didn't mix colours together. These works which are severe and austere are
also beautiful.
If
Mondrian was still alive he would be 151 years old on March the 7th (that
is, if my maths was correct – he was born in 1872)

I love his art, even though I also love impressionism but these clear lines, they've got something.
ReplyDeleteI remember Mondrian from the 70's. Abstract was big back then so he was big. I did get to see some of his work once. Of the one's that you are showing here, I love the tree. I picked up some plates at the thrift store the other day that have a Mondrian-like border. :)
