An old artist for you today – Hans Holbein  (the Younger) – who was for a time the Court Painter for that old tartar Henry VIII.

Anne of Cleves by Holbein

He did fall out of favour with the King who became incensed when the miniature he did of Anne of Cleves turned out to be more flattering than real life – Henry married her but then had the marriage declared void.

I find many of his portraits quite exquisitely painted as well as providing a window into an interesting period of English history.

  1. I love the top picture- and have a postcard of it pinned up in my sewing room! Some say it is Thomas More's ward, Margaret - but most think it is Ann Lovell, from my beloved county of Norfolk - and the Starling is a pun on Harling [where she lived]
When you think how they manipulate photographs nowadays, I think HH's take on Ann of Cleves is merely an early form of PhotoShop Airbrushing!!

    LOVELY post, thankyou xx
