Birdsong by Sebastian Faulks made quite an
impact on me. Some parts of the book are
incredibly gory and gut wrenching but overall it is such a great story that I
had to keep reading on.
The
story is set in France before, during and after World War I. It is intensely
romantic whilst being very realistic about war itself. There is a bit of sex stuff in the novel.
It
is 20 years since Birdsong was first published but don't let that put you off. It is haunting and beautiful and harrowing.
I have this on my bookshelves. Time to get to this one.
ReplyDeleteI just watched the film of this book!
ReplyDeleteI have also got a copy of this book. Would love one day to visit the battlefields and graveyards of northern France and Belgium. I really like the picture of Edwardian society the author paints in Birdsong. Women dressed so elegantly and good manners mattered so much.
ReplyDeleteI absolutely loved this book. Haven't seen the movie, yet, but it's on my wishlist. Maybe you would like to look at my blog about this novel: Birdsong
ReplyDeleteI didn't have a chance to read this for the WWI challenge last year, but it's still on my to-read list. It sounds fantastic.
ReplyDeleteI saw the BBC miniseries and loved it so much. This book has been on my TBR list since then. It's time to get my copy!
ReplyDeleteHaven't heard of this book...thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteStopping by from Carole's Books You Loved April Edition. I am in the list as #21.
