Robert Ellis is a contemporary New
Zealand artist (born in the UK). As you
can see his work is bi-cultural in nature.
He is a Pakeha but his wife's family are Maori and so that has
influenced his work.
One
of his noted series is called the Motorway series (1963-74)– it's interesting
that he can make motorways (or freeways) beautiful.
All
his work centres around the need to preserve everything that is valuable from
the past. Note that aroha means love in Maori - not romantic love as such but generalised love for things and people.
He taught at the Elam art school and influenced a generation of artists.
