Food on Friday: Childhood favourites (or favorites)

ON

Our theme for Food on Friday today is links about food from our childhoods.  I have a memory of having a sandwich made with fresh strawberries and sweetened condensed milk – sounds awful to me now but I loved it then!

Please link in any posts you have about your favourite foods as a child.

Put your name AND the name of the dish in the first box and paste your url of the post into the second one.

Then pop over and visit some of the other links and spread the fun around a bit!  Have a great week, everyone.

  15. My eating menu has changed a lot since I was young. I found out just how much last year when I was helping my parents through my fathers illness. I still love meringue cookies and rice pudding and bread pudding. Oh now I want bread pudding to eat during the snow storm we are supposed to get overnight.

  21. My mother used Italian sausage in the dish I posted, but it really tastes better with British sausage. It's probably available now, but it wasn't back then (in the USA). The recipe for the savoury suet pudding really took me back. I love them!!! And all the savoury pies too like Steak & Ale and Steak & Kidney.

  37. Hi Carole,

Thanks for the invitation. The idea of strawberries and condensed milk sounds good, but adding bread not so much. Funny how our tastes change as we grow older. :) Great roundup!

  39. I've entered three recipes, because I couldn't choose between them! The first is Swiss Eggs, which I can remember my Mum making for us for lunch during school holidays. They were (and still are!) a real treat. The second is Braised Oxtail, which I can remember my Mum swearing over (because picking the meat from the bones is a real labour of love), when I began swearing over doing the same job! lol Lastly is Buttermilk Chicken & Bacon, which is one of those recipes that just brings back memories with its flavours. For me, I can see us all sat around the table for a weekday evening meal, eating the succulent chicken with mashed potato and vegetables, whilst chatting about our days. Fab. :)

  40. Hi, Carole. Sorry I'm late--I've been sick all week!
I linked two recipes this week that bring back a lot of childhood memories. Red Velvet Cake, which my grandpa made for my birthday every year and Trout Meunière which was one of my dad's specialties. I really enjoyed this week's theme. Thank you!

  42. I linked up a Burmese fish noodle soup recipe reminiscent of my childhood in Burma. It is a heartwarming dish, ideal for the cool fall, winter and spring seasons.

  43. I linked mac and cheese, but a re-made version with wine and truffle oil- this one's not for kids!

  45. I've been visiting Shirl's since it opened on Washington St in Waukegan IL about 60 years ago. Here's an authentic Grub recipe: Season with Salt & Pepper and Brown 1# of ground chuck and 1/3# of ground pork, drain most of the fat - not all. Reduce heat and throw in 1 or two minced garlic cloves, stir for a minute, don't burn the garlic. Add 1 packet of Onion Soup Mix, stir. Then I run it through a food processor to make it fine (authentic, but not necessary). Now add 1/3 cup of beef consomme and 3/4 cup of tomato juice, simmer and reduce, you want it like sloppy joes not dry. Add more pepper and tomato juice if necessary - enjoy it on its own or with cheese sauce. Note: Montreal Steak Seasoning is on the spicy hot side - Grub Burgers are NoT.
