11 February - Solution for the last clue and the next cryptic crossword clue

Was king around end of thirties – abdicated (8)
Solution – resigned

Was king = reigned

You find "reigned" around "end of thirties" ie s, the last letter of "thirties".
So you get resigned – which is what someone who abdicates does.

I like this clue because it makes you thing about King Edward VIII who abdicated to marry Mrs Simpson at the end of the Thirties!

Today’s cryptic crossword clue – solution tomorrow

I'm Toby, cranky and eccentric, opposing local development (3,2,2,4,4)
