84 Charing Cross Road is not a new book. It
dates back to 1970. But it is a triumph of a book which has stood the test of
time very well. It is based on a true
story. If you haven't ever read it, get
it out from the library. It is a quick
and very appealing read. I am not going
to tell you much more about it – but don't be put off by the letter
format! Here it really works!
A
couple of quotes from the book:
“Why is it that people who wouldn't dream
of stealing anything else think it's perfectly all right to steal books?”
“It's against my principles to buy a book I
haven't read, it's like buying a dress you haven't tried on.”
I would probably buy it just because of the letter format!
ReplyDeleteThat's an interesting book. Thanks for the info (:
ReplyDeleteHappy New Year!
I love this book, and its sequel - and as much as I enjoy Anne Bancroft & Anthony Hopkins, I think it's much better than the film version. I've never seen the edition you're showing, though.
ReplyDeleteI often think of her comment about weeding out books from her shelves - which I need to do more often myself.
I've loved this book for years - it's one on its own isn't it, not like any other book... I can remember making a pilgrimage to the Charing Cross Rd so I could imagine the setting.
ReplyDeleteI always found the title intriguing. Will look out for it. Thanks.
ReplyDeleteAnother great book written in letter format is The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society! I liked it very much so I would definitely consider another written in the same fashion. I've heard of the book before but have not yet had the opportunity to read it. Now my attention is piqued!
ReplyDeleteGreat choice, Carole.
ReplyDeleteI loved this book.
