Rita Angus - a New Zealand artist of great distinction

Central Otago by Rita Angus

Rita Angus was a New Zealand artist whose most famous works were done in the 30's and 40's.  She only ever did one abstract work but her art was modernistic for its time.

She didn't receive much recognition for her art until quite late in life.  But Rita Angus is now one of the most recognised and revered artists.  Rita died in 1970.

This Portrait of Betty Curnow is interesting to me, not least because I read that she saw the material for the blouse in a shop, purchased it, had it made into a blouse and then set up the portrait sitting.

Cass is probably Rita's most famous painting.  It is set in the South Island like the painting Central Otago at the top of this post.

Head of a Maori Boy is quite striking.  Something about the planes of the boy's face.

  2. The third one, Cass, is my favourite. The sky is so live and then the mountains on either side look so inviting.

Thanks for introducing me to this author.
