Solution for 12 September cryptic crossword clue

Volley made by Sarah playing against Oscar (5) – salvo

Ok, I don't blame you if you think today's clue and solution is a bit weird.  Most of you probably think the whole cryptic crossword thing is weird and wonder why I persist with it!

A salvo can be a volley in the sense of a volley of gunfire in a battle.  You can also get to salvo by taking Sal (short for Sarah) and adding v as an abbreviation for against and then O as an abbreviation for Oscar – which is used to represent O in the phonetic alphabet used by the military which is another nice touch in relation to the meaning of salvo.

This is the type of clue that relies on abbreviations.  For more about different clue types please refer to the sidebar listing them out.
