Casseroles,
say, old and new, Vera smashed (8)
Solution – ovenware
This is an anagram based clue. While spotting the part of the clue that
points to an anagram is reasonably easy – "smashed", the clue is a
bit tricky. Firstly there is
"say" which is often used to indicate a "sounds like" word
is involved.
But here it is used as
meaning "for example".
So the solution is in the
same category as "casseroles" – and ovenware works for that. The anagram is of "new, Vera" with
the addition of "o" for "old".
