St Lawrence being the patron saint
of cooking seems to be based on the fact that the emperor commanded that he
should be executed by being roasted alive.
When this was happening he is said to have said to his executioners “I
think I’m done on this side, why not turn me over?” Courageous to jest in the midst of a ghastly
death.
Sometimes the reasons for why a saint is a patron of something do seem odd... though this is certainly very odd!
