Hone Heke - an early Maori activist

Hone Heke

Hone Heke was a prominent Maori chief who challenged the authority of the Crown – in particular by chopping down the flagpole at Waitangi three times within the space of 6 months – nothing if not persistent.  This all happened back  in the first half of the 19th century.  He died on 6 August 1850 that is exactly 162 years ago.
