Marc Chagall was born in Russia on this day in 1887. He came out of poverty and his childhood is
reflected in much of his work. His most
famous painting is "The Green Fiddler" which was painted the year he
arrived to live in Paris.
This
painting is featured in the book "Paintings that changed the
world". It is generally known as
The Fiddler on the Roof. Apparently it
was part of the inspiration for the musical of the same name. As you can see, he is an early Modernist –
almost a primitive in some ways. He not
only painted he also did stained glass work including for Reims and Metz
cathedrals.
He
had to escape occupied France during WWII and emigrated to America for some
years before returning to France.
What
I like about his works, is not so much their subject matter but the glorious
colours he uses. Here are some more
examples

Wonderful post - of course I'm biased because he is my all time favorite visual artist. Thank you for visiting my beachy living room :)
ReplyDeleteReally interesting, I didn't know that was the inspiration for Fiddler on the Roof. Thanks for checking out my blog too, have a good week :)
ReplyDeleteHi, Carole! Thank you for an interesting post! Although my taste is more towards the Impressionists, such as Renoir, I can appreciate the vivid use of colors in Chagall's paintings!
