Caravaggio - a master of the Baroque

Narcissus

Caravaggio died on 18 July in 1610 – that’s 402 years ago.  How time flies.

He did most of his work while living in Rome, Italy.  He was what is called a Baroque painter.

St Jerome

His work was condemned by people at the time because he depicted Biblical scenes with uncompromising realism.  Like in this painting, The Death of the Virgin.  People were scandalised by her dirty feet stuck out. The Virgin is shown as an older woman whereas most painters showed her as a idealised forever young figure.

Death of the Virgin

Caravaggio lived a wild and dissolute life – but his paintings are breath-taking.   He died of malaria at the too young age of 36.  But his influence on the story of art was immense.
