Solution for 18 June cryptic crossword clue
Petersham, perhaps, seen in outstanding film (9)
Solution – Great coat
I had a vague idea that Petersham was an item of clothing – picked up from a Georgette Heyer book, I suspect. I looked it up and found out that it was a name of a type of coat – the "greatcoat"
From there it was easy to see that great = outstanding and that "coat" is a type of film on something.
This is an example of a charades clue. For more explanation of different clue types, see the sidebar under the list of popular posts.
