Solution for 16 June cryptic crossword clue

Betray Lorraine, for example (6-5)
Solution – Double Cross

Now this is a tricky one. Obviously "double cross" does mean "betray". But how does the second part of the clue add up to that phrase?

You have to get a bit historical. The Free French in WWII, adopted the Cross of Lorraine as their symbol. It was also used much earlier in the Crusades. It is an example of a double cross which is where the link to the solution comes in.

This is the sort of clue you have to be lucky to be able to solve. Having some letters filled in on the grid is about the only way to deal with it. I just included it so you can see how these clues can draw on esoteric facts.
