Pet Hates #7 - Dim lighting in museums

Ok, I'm not usually a whiner – but why do most museums insist on having such dim lighting even in areas without precious artefacts that might be damaged by light?  It makes for an unattractive grim atmosphere.  I would love to hear about any you know of that are brightly lit.
