Feijoa chutney

A friend gave me her surplus feijoa's plus a recipe for Feijoa chutney. I had never made chutney before but needless to say I still couldn't help myself and tweaked the recipe! So it is quite a spicy version.

For those of you who aren't lucky enough to have access to feijoas, this is what they look like.

You just put the following ingredients all in a large pot and simmer it away for about 2 hours until it is nice and thick (but not dry).

1kg (say 2lb) feijoas – don't peel them, just top and tail them and then slice them reasonably finely

500g (1lb) of finely chopped onions

2 large apples, chopped up – I used Granny Smiths (these were my own idea)

300g (say 1/2 lb) raisins – chopped

400g ( say ¾lb) dates - chopped

500g brown sugar (1 lb)

1 tablespoon of ground ginger – I used grated fresh ginger

1 tablespoon of curry powder – I used a tad more

1 teaspoon of ground cloves – I ground up my own – (cloves have a strong flavour so I wouldn't use any more than this)

¼ tsp of cayenne pepper – I used ½ tsp

4 dried red chillies chopped after soaking in hot water (optional extra)

4 teaspoons of plain salt

4 cups (1 litre) of malt vinegar

Here's what it looked like at the start of the cooking process:

Here it is after about an hour and a half.

And here is the finished product.  It has gone down a storm with my better half.  But we do like spicy food.

  8. Oh I LOVE these!! We had a tree growing up in our yard in California. Of course we just called them guava's. We would slice them in half and scoop out the inside with a spoon. We had lots of fruit trees and this was the one I never got tired of. Thanks for bringing back great memories.
