Solution for 17 May cryptic crossword clue

Taxing person joined types in Greenwich and Fulham (7)

Solution – Handful

This is an example of a hidden word clue.  See sidebar for links to more explanation of different types of clues.

The definition of the solution is “taxing person” which here, isn’t used in the sense of the taxman, but in the sense of someone people find “taxing” ie hard work or annoying.  So if someone is a “handful” that fits that part of the clue.

The indicator that there is a hidden word is deliberately disguised - “joined types in” – but it is the “in” which gives it away.  That together with the use of 2 proper nouns in the second part of the clue.  So there we find “handful” ie Greenwich and Fulham
